Travel Plans

A Travel Plan sets out practical measures to encourage sustainable travel and manage the transport effects of a development. Depending on the scheme and planning requirements, it may include objectives, measures, targets, responsibilities, monitoring arrangements and a programme for review.

The appropriate form of Travel Plan depends on the type and scale of development, the information available at the planning stage and local requirements. Fastnet can advise on the proportionate approach and prepare the document needed to support an application or discharge a planning condition.

Framework Travel Plan

A Framework Travel Plan is commonly used for a larger development with several occupiers, phases or land uses where the eventual occupants are not yet known. It establishes the overarching principles and requirements for later occupier-specific Travel Plans.

Interim Travel Plan

An Interim Travel Plan may be appropriate where key details, such as the occupier or precise mix of uses, have not been confirmed. It provides the available measures and initial targets, together with a clear process for preparing or updating the Full Travel Plan once the necessary information is known.

Full Travel Plan

A Full Travel Plan is generally appropriate where sufficient information is available about the development and its users. It sets out specific measures, targets, management responsibilities and monitoring arrangements, informed by relevant evidence and expected travel patterns.

Travel Plan Statement

For a smaller development, a concise Travel Plan Statement may be sufficient. This typically records practical commitments to support walking, wheeling, cycling, public transport and other alternatives to single-occupancy car travel, without the full monitoring regime of a larger Travel Plan.

Area-wide Travel Plan

An area-wide approach can coordinate travel planning across a masterplan, estate or group of related sites. It can set shared objectives and measures while allowing individual plots or occupiers to provide more detailed Travel Plans where required.
